Why Salt?

Salt is a horse’s most critical mineral, while water is its most vital nutrient! Salt triggers thirst and assists fluid balance in the body, decreasing the risk of dehydration and debilitating diseases. It’s also essential for digestion and helps fire nerve impulses and muscle contractions—helping horses move fluidly and perform their best.

Why Minerals?

Minerals play an essential role in every part of a horse’s wellbeing, from maintaining bone structure to hoof and coat health and regulating chemical processes. Because minerals are continually used, they must also be consistently replenished. Over time, a diet lacking diverse minerals can take a toll on equine health and wellness.

Common Causes of Mineral Deficiency in Horses

4 Ways to Support Healthy Equine Mineral Balance

Horses have varying nutritional needs based on age, growth phase, and activity level. Work with your vet or equine nutritionist to create a balanced feed plan, and consider this foundational strategy as you begin:

High-quality hay is a mainstay in the equine diet. While it may not meet all the nutritional needs of growing or high-performance horses, it can often supply enough protein and energy for less active adults. To understand the nutritional value of your hay, test it at a forage lab to determine fiber, energy, and mineral content.

Hay is enough for many adult horses. However, growing foals, performance horses, or seniors may need additional grains/concentrates. Talk to an expert to determine the specific grains and ratios your horse requires.

Whenever possible, give your horse ample turnout on pasture with a variety of grasses. Turnout not only allows them to graze additional minerals from the soil and plants, but also allows them to soak up mood- and immune-boosting vitamin D.

Give your horse both a free-choice lick and loose mineral supplement. Look for high-quality options with a full spectrum of nutrients in balanced ratios. The best supplements contain chelated, or bioavailable, minerals that are easily absorbed.

Meet Shelby and her Arabian K-Love

Shelby’s horse wouldn't use his salt block even when exercised hard. She worried about mineral deficiencies and dehydration and went in search of an alternative. Read her story.

Shelby and her Arabian K-Love

I've owned my gelding K-Love ++/ since 2011. He's now 15 years old and is a very well-behaved, respectful Arabian. He’s giving an excellent name to the Arabian breed in Norco, California, an equestrian-oriented town where the bar is set high with horse training.

K-Love and I do a lot of groundwork, as well as trail and street riding. I love being outside and feel peaceful when we're on the trail together. We also participate in dressage, which is an exciting and challenging discipline for me.
